Sustainable cat food: French start-up Tomojo storms the UK market
Eco-friendly insect food to delight the taste buds of your cat? TOMOJO launches an innovative, new product for the UK market. One in four Britons has a cat – in 2019 UK had 11 million cats.
A GLOBAL INNOVATION, FIRST TESTED ON THE FRENCH MARKET
Having fed French dogs with 10 tonnes of insect food in 2019, TOMOJO is launching the world’s first insect cat food – an innovative recipe developed in association with veterinary nutritionists, designed to minimize its environmental impact while providing a healthy and traceable diet. TOMOJO was founded as a start-up in 2017 by Madeleine Morley and Paola Teulières.
MADE IN FRANCE
TOMOJO pet food is made in Mayenne (France) with a carefully balanced mix of insects from Holland (Black soldier flies, Hermetia Illucens and mealworm, Ténébrio, Molitor), elaborated with natural ingredients of which 85% are sourced in France (peas, lentils, aromatic herbs, potatoes, chickpeas, brewer’s yeast, chia seeds, beet pulp, spirulina, etc.). The plant-based powder is mixed with the insect flour to make a dough which is extruded and then cut into kibbles which are then packaged in biodegradable packaging.
AN ECO-CONCIOUS DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL
As the lockdown has testified that owners are increasingly ordering pet food online, TOMOJO pet food is available in a growing number of online and retail zero waste shops: Lintendance.co (zero waste platform delivering in Ile de France), packaging free retail specialists such as « Le drive tout nu » in Toulouse and « Le petit Pot » in Avignon.
Compared to premium beef kibble, a 7 kg bag of Tomojo insect cat food saves 94 kg of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere, 608 litres of water and preserves 77 m2 of land space.

TOMOJO is the story of two friends, Madeleine (26) and Paola (25), who after having completed a master’s degree in environmental sciences at Imperial College London, embarked on a sustainable entrepreneurship pet food journey.
